Located on the Belizean isle of Ambergris Caye, Mata Chica Beach Resort is a stylish and exclusive hideaway set on a secluded glistening white sand beach reached only by boat from the town of San Pedro.
The resort is cabaƱa-style and the ambience is decidedly laid-back.
Mata Chica provides a tranquil base from which to explore the barrier reef and enjoy some of the watersports on offer. Mata Chica also prides itself on its excellent spa, and the resort's Mambo Restaurant serves some of the most exquisite cuisine on the island.
Location
Mata Chica Beach Resort is located on a secluded white sand beach on Ambergris Caye, 40km long and the largest of 450 cayes dotted along the 290km barrier reef that hugs the coastline of Belize.
The resort is reached by air from Belize City, 56km away on the mainland. The flight to San Pedro is by light aircraft and takes about 20 minutes cruising low over the reef's glistening and transparent waters. You will be met at the airstrip for a short transfer by taxi to the jetty and a 20-minute boat ride to the resort.
Things to do
With Belize's Great Barrier Reef beckoning, there is a wide array of watersports on offer. Snorkelling or diving at sites along the reef such as nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Stingray & Shark Alley is outstanding. Additionally, the outer atolls including the world renowned Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef can be explored.
Reef as well as flat fishing can be arranged. There are kayaks and windsurfs at the guests' disposal.
Trips to visit the rainforest and Mayan ruins on the mainland are available. Alternatively relax in a hammock or on a sunlounger on the beach, or take advantage of the massage and beauty treatments in the resort's excellent Spa.
Our comment
"'Mambos' the hotel's restaurant is regarded by many as the best on the island and we agree. Local produce, red snapper and lobster are cooked to perfection alongside international cuisine." |
