Taquile Island

En route to Taquile Island, stop at the reed islands originally constructed by the Uros fishermen but which are now more of a living museum, testimony to their founders' unique and uncompromising way of life. Homes, churches and schools are built entirely of reeds, which are also used for cooking, remedies and souvenirs. Further across the lake, Taquile’s tight-knit island society preserves a unique communal way of life: men knit, women weave, children herd sheep. There are few concessions to modern lifestyles here: you may spend the night with a local family, better to appreciate the serene atmosphere, but don’t expect any creature comforts on Taquile! You are living in harmony with the people. The serene countryside, peppered with ruins and ancient terraces, and the bright azur waters of the lake compensate for any discomfort.
