Cusco: Choquequirao Trek

5 days as part of a tailor-made holiday to Peru

We offer you a 5-day challenging, fully-supported trek with mules, with a magnificent Inca city as its highlight - Choquequirao, a huge site perched on a spur in dense foliage. The ruins are still only partly excavated but you can easily fill a day exploring the walls and temples.

This is a worthy alternative to the classic inca trail to Machu Picchu or, if you have already hiked that iconic trek and enjoyed it, an excellent choice for a further hike.

The steep ascents and descents reward with views over a clutch of skeletal, snow-shrouded peaks and dark chasms. A variety of vegetation and wildlife accompanies the changes in the microclimate, with orchids and tropical birds at the warmer lower levels while condors soar over the treeless crags above the snow-line.

Suggested Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Cusco to Cachora (5hrs). Trek to Chikiska. camp.
Day 2: Climb a steep trail to Raqaypata. Camp close to Choquequirao (3,035m).
Day 3: Explore the ruins of Choquequirao, guided tour. Camp at Raqaypata.
Day 4: Descend towards the Apurimac River. Camp at Coca Masana.
Day 5: Climb to Capuliyoc. Flat trail to Cachora. Bus to Cusco.

Our Comment

This is a superb trek through harsh terrain with breathtaking views. The long climbs and steep descents mean that it is only suitable for experienced, fit and acclimatised trekkers.
