3 days as part of a tailor-made holidayThis trek departs from the trekking town of Huaraz.
The moderately demanding hike offers the opportunity to hike with llamas, which carry your camping equipment and add a bit of local colour. The hike passes through the Cordillera Blanca’s fertile glacial valleys, icy crags and hardy forests, mirror-sharp lakes and streams.
You will camp at over 4,000m, hike along ancient trails and visit isolated traditional communities. The hike ends at the lower-lying, pre-Inca archaeological site of Chavín de Huántar. The ancient (800BC) Chavín culture is one of the most artistically advanced in Peru. The site comprises a complex of terraces, with.squares, walls and columns adorned with the ornate sculptures of symbolic figures, animals and deities.
You can also visit Chavín while based at Huaraz, market town and tourist centre. Enjoy a full day tour to Chavín de Huántar, . From Huaraz we also recommend a day trip to Callejón de Huaylas and the brilliant turquoise Lake Llanganuco at the foot of Huascarán, Peru’s highest peak (6,768m).
