Full canal transit and tour of Panama City
Fridays* (twice monthly)
4 days, 3 nights
The 80km Panama Canal connects the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. It cuts through a low saddle in the mountainous isthmus linking Central / North and South America.
Your hotel in Panama City’s central district is close to shops and restaurants. On Saturday, make a transit of the 68km Panama Canal, starting from the port of Balboa on the country’s Pacific coast. The first stop is Miraflores Locks, where the ship will be raised 17m above sea level in 2 steps and enter Miraflores Lake. The ship is raised another 9m before entering the narrowest section of the Canal, which opens up into Gatun Lake. Further locks lower the ship back to sea-level on the Atlantic (Caribbean) side in 3 steps and the canal terminates at the port of Cristóbal, from where you return to the capital.
On Sunday you will have a tour of the city including the ruins of Old Panama, vestiges left by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671 after sacking the town.
*There is a partial canal transit if the full day one is not operating on the Saturday you request. (Enquire for dates of both)
How about?
Flying to the reefs and rainforest of the Bocas del Toro archipelago for the perfect combination of city and beach break.
