Detailed Holiday ItineraryDay 1: Arrive Georgetown, Guyana.
Day 2: Free day to explore Georgetown or take an optional tour (packed lunch) to spectacular Kaieteur Falls, reached by air.
Day 3: A morning flight to Rock View Lodge (FB) located where the savannah meets the forest-covered foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains.
Day 4: Continue (40km laterite road) to Surama Lodge (FB), in the Amerindian village of the Macushi tribe.
Day 5: Dawn walk across the savannah and up Surama Mountain. Have breakfast at a point overlooking the village, spot pearl kite, white-tailed and savannah hawk. Afternoon walk across the savannah and through the rainforest for excursion by paddled canoe on Burro Burro River (FB).
Day 6: Pre-dawn drive to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. Continue (60km laterite road) to Annai (L) airstrip for afternoon flight to Georgetown.
Day 7: Morning Georgetown city tour, mid-afternoon flight to Paramaribo, Suriname (approx two hours).
Day 8: Excursion across the river to Commewijne, visiting preserved Dutch colonial cacao plantation at Fredricksdorp. (L)
Day 9: Journey south to Jodensavanne (L), originally settled by Jewish refugees fleeing persecution, first in Europe and then in Cayenne. Visit the ruins of the oldest synagogue in the Americas. Continue to the tannin-rich creek waters of Blakawatra.
Day 10: Travel by paved road along the coast to the French Guiana border (ferry or motorised canoe crossing of Maroni river) to St. Laurent – short visit to the restored remains of the Transportation Camp for the penal colony; and to the church in Iracoubo (L). Overnight Kourou.
Day 11: Full day excursion by catamaran to the notorious offshore former penal colony, Iles du Salut (Iles Royale (L) and St Joseph) with view of Devil’s Island, featured in the bestselling book and film, ‘Papillon’. Guided visit (in French only) of Ile Royale and museum (displays also in English).
Day 12: Visit the Kourou Space Centre (in French only, film in English, possible separate explanations in English). Tour the main installations (three hours), followed by a museum visit (displays also in English).Transfer to Cayenne for a city tour including Place des Palmistes, Place de Grenole and Fort Ceperou.
Day 13: Transfer to the airport. |
