Guatemala Verapaz and the Petén

Following a night in Guatemala City, drive to Cobán (2 nights), perched on a limestone plateau, with a hike in the Biotopo del Quetzal cloud-forest reserve. Visit the series of natural pools at Semuc Champey, where you may dip in the clear green waters before continuing to the caves at Lanquín with their underground river and weird rock formations.
Drive on from Cobán via the huge Candelaria caves to Sayaxché, situated on Lake Petexbatún across which you will take a boat to Petexbatún Lodge for one night. From here, visit Mayan sites hilltop Aguateca and Ceibal, reached by river and hidden among giant ceiba trees and jungle vines.
Finally, drive to Flores on Lago Petén Itzá, and visit the ruins at Tikal with a guided tour of the vast jungle site. Return to Flores airport. | Read more about: Central and north east Guatemala
