Guatemala

Spanish Course in Antigua

Antigua was the capital of Guatemala, and the finest city in Central America, until it was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1773. Many colonial buildings have been restored or rebuilt. This picturesque city is the cultural centre of the country, with thriving Indian traditions and music. One of the most beautiful cities in all of Latin America, with charm and a relaxed atmosphere.

Programmes are offered at several schools, the most appropriate is selected based upon Spanish level, homestay requests and teacher availability.

Language Programme

  • Maximum 4 students per class
  • Beginner's level to advanced level.
  • Teaching method - Mostly conversation and "traditional" grammar coverage.
  • Arrival first day of class - You will be picked up for your class around 7:45am and taken to the school.
  • Placement test - This takes place on the first day of classes, usually at 8am.
  • Orientation - On the first Monday of classes there's is an orientation tour of the town.
  • Class schedule - Low season 8am - noon (4 hours per day). During high season students may have classes in the afternoon as well.

  • Most students are from Europe and U.S.A. (some from Asia and Australia).
  • Age group - All ages (but more college students during the summer).
  • Facilities - Casual, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to indoor classrooms many schools have gardens or patios where classes take place. All are within walking distance of the central plaza.
  • The school organizes optional activities from Monday to Thursday after class.
  • Weekend trips can be booked on arrival.

Accommodation

If staying with a family the airport pick-up is included. You will be met at Guatemala City and taken to your homestay in Antigua (1 hour's drive).

Homestays

All homestays are within walking distance of the schools.

  • There are almost always other students living in the same homestay. It's common that homestays in Antigua are more like small boarding houses with 3-5 students per house (in some cases up to 10 per house). If enough notice is given, we can sometimes arrange one student per family, especially outside of the busy summer months.
  • 3 meals per day provided by the family, except Sunday.
  • Private bathroom - Available in some homes. There is more chance if registering well in advance.
  • Extra homestay nights - Yes, available at extra cost. The homestay included in the programme cost starts Sunday and ends Saturday.
  • There are many laundry places where they wash and fold your laundry for a small cost. In some cases individual arrangements can be made with the host family or their maid upon arrival at $4-$6 per week.

Family Consideration - One of the most important parts of your learning and cultural experience is the homestay. You will receive a key to the outside door and will be able to come and go as you please. You are not obliged to eat all your meals with the family, but should notify them when not.

In Antigua, it is difficult to guarantee lots of family interaction. Guatemalans are friendly and enjoy talking to you if you make the effort. Generally, the host families who provide more creature comforts, have larger homes and host more students which often means less family interaction.

Your host family respects your beliefs and we ask that you show that same respect. It is a good idea to bring some pictures of family, friends, your house, a map that shows where you live. These can be used to begin discussions.

Notify the school if you wish to change families.
