Stelae of Quiriguá and the Mayan city of Tikal

Itinerary

Day 1 Drive 45km to Antigua.
Day 2 Meander through its cobbled streets lined with pastel facades, and the shady, peaceful plazas dominated by colonial churches.
Day 3 Depart for Quiriguá (4hrs). This Mayan city served as an important trading post between Tikal and Copán. Famed for its intricate masonry the site contains the tallest stelae (11m) discovered in the Mayan world. Continue to a basic hotel on the banks of the river Rio Dulce, accessible only by boat. The narrow gorge is bordered by two towering walls of dense jungle foliage.
Day 4 At leisure to visit the sleepy Garifuna town of Livingston or invade the 16th century Spanish fort `Castillo San Felipe’
Day 5 By land 4hrs) to El Petén and the dizzyingly-high temples of Tikal. Set deep in abundant jungle foliage, the peaks of the tallest pyramids rise above the level of the forest canopy. Overnight in a basic lodge.
Day 6 Return by air to Guatemala City. Overnight.
Day 7 Transfer to the airport.
