Mayan art of Copán, Honduras

Although Copán is over the border in Honduras, its location makes it easy to visit from Guatemala either as a side trip from the highlands or as part of a longer trip continuing through to Honduras. This trip can also originate in San Pedro Sula (Honduras).

Itinerary

Day 1 Early departure to the border town at Rio Hondo (4hrs) then 13km to the Mayan city of Copán. Protected by thick vegetation, this most magnificent of finds is under continual evaluation as the enormity of the site and its significance in the Mayan World continues to be realised. Overnight at Hotel Marina Copán; a colonial-style house with a pool in the  village of Copán Ruinas.
Day 2 At leisure to re-visit the ruins (within walking distance) and its Museum of Sculpture, where you enter through the mouth of a serpent and exit through its tail.
Day 3 Drive back to Guatemala City.
