Suggested holiday itinerary (flexible)
Day 1: Fly from the UK to San Salvador, you will be taken to your hotel situated in the fashionable Zona Rosa area packed with bars and restaurants.
Day 2: Take a morning city tour before driving outside the capital to the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén, the remains of a pre-Columbian village remarkably preserved under layers of volcanic ash. Next stop is the lovely colonial town of Suchitoto, spending three nights at Los Almendros, a completely renovated former hacienda decorated with local artwork. Enjoy an afternoon boat trip on Lake Suchitlán whose shores are abundant with birdlife.
Day 3: Venture into neighbouring Honduras for the day, visiting the splendid ruins of Copán. It is not as immense as the sites of Tikal or Chichen Itzá, but the Maya people's craftsmanship has survived the sands of time - most impressively evident on the intricate carvings on its stone stelae.
Day 4: A day at leisure to enjoy the cobbled streets and colonial ambience of Suchitoto.
Day 5: A drive amongst wonderful mountain scenery known as Ruta de las Flores - peppered with sugar cane and coffee plantations and backed by volcanoes. Pass through several quaint colonial villages, stopping to admire handicrafts, visit a coffee grinding beneficio and enjoy the food markets that take place at weekends. Overnight in a rural lodge 3 km from Apaneca village , the highest village in El Salvador with its invigorating mountain air.
Day 6: Visit El Imposible National Park, part of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range. The tropical forest is home to wide array of flora and fauna. Trek along the park’s trails (2-5 hours depending on the time of year), including to a lookout point over the exuberant valley below. Depart for El Sunzal on the Pacific coast in the afternoon. The area has good beaches and is a haven for surfers. Stay at Casa de Marin in bungalow-style rooms for four nights.
Days 7-9: Relax at your hotel, with the pool or beach at your disposal.
Day 10: Transfer to the airport for your flight to the Uk, arriving day 11.
