The elegant Star Flyer is a modern four-masted schooner designed with the ‘grand old age of sail’ in mind. It has teak, mahogany and brass furnishings, antique paintings, an Edwardian-style library and a faux Belle Epoque fireplace. The vessel is 115m long and its masts reach a lofty 68m in height. Although motorised, the vessel's sails are used when winds permit and can propel her along comfortably at 10 knots.
The facilities
Cabins are located on four decks in doubles, twins and upper/lower berth. The dining room serves a buffet breakfast and lunch with dinner being a more formal sit-down meal with menu. There is also a Piano Bar and adjoining Tropical Bar, the latter also acting as an aerobics room, live entertainment venue and area for meetings and presentations. There are two sun decks, each with a glass-bottomed small pool.
Optional activities
An array of water-sports are offered by a designated crew team including snorkelling, scuba diving and water-skiing. An array of optional excursions ashore are offered including jungle walks, river kayaking, boat trips, and zip-lining through the forest canopy and visits to tropical islands and national parks. Passengers can also climb to the crow's nest halfway up the mast by harness - a breathtaking experience - or lounge in the nets at the front of the ship.
The feel
The atmosphere on board is pleasantly informal, relaxed and social - and there tends to be a variety of nationalities. The dress code is casual though t-shirts and shorts are not allowed for dinner. While daytimes are dedicated to activities ashore, nightly entertainment by crew and local performers is laid on each evening after dinner. Children are welcome on board but there are no specific kids’ facilities or activities as such.
