We in the office here agree that there's nothing more thrilling than a white-water ride down one of Costa Rica's excitable rivers. Equipment and food is first class, the pilots are extremely competent and the picnic food is scrumptuous. You may ride Class III and IV rapids (not suitable for children under 12 years)
Day 1 There is a 3.5 hour drive through Costa Rica’s verdant interior to the river. The Pacuare River forges through one of the tropics’ most impressive canyons cutting across a rare area of natural wilderness. The rapids are suitable for beginners and experienced rafters alike, but not for young children (Class III-IV). There is plenty of calm water that allows you to sit back and enjoy the surrounding forest and its wildlife; herons, toucans, blue morpho butterflies and monkeys are all common sights. Camp overnight on the riverbank.
Day 2 An early put-in means that you are virtually alone on the river for the first part of the day. You will be rafting for approximately four hours on an exhilarating trip that comprises many more rapids, side hikes and impressive canyon scenery. Begin the two-hour return journey to San José mid-afternoon. This can be done as a full day trip.
How about?
- a day’s more gentle rafting on the Reventazón. Suitable for families with younger children and those who want a soft introduction to the sport.
- upgrading to Pacuare Lodge if you don't fancy camping |
