Stay in the lively capital Bogotá – set in a bowl high in the Andes. Drive to a nearby theme park which has fun rides, go-karts, zoo, boating lake, replicas of dinosaurs and famous buildings like the Taj Mahal... and lots more. Continue to the Maloka science centre offering high tech fun with interactive games and challenges. But the highlight of a stay here is a visit the superb, beautifully laid-out Gold Museum, which has the world’s biggest collection of Pre-Hispanic gold. For quite literally breathtaking views over the city take a cable car and funicular train to the top of the mountain which looms over the city..
Fly to Pereira, in the heart of the country’s celebrated coffee region for an authentic countryside stay. The gorgeous scenery is hilly, very green and lush with coffee bushes, bamboo jungles and banana plants. You’ll stay on a small and friendly coffee farm and see how coffee is still produced in the traditional way, with the berries picked by hand. Swim in the river, explore nature trails, learn about the life-cycle of silkworms, watch a pig race or horse show, or go canopying.
Next, fly to Cartagena, a fascinating Spanish colonial port on the turquoise Caribbean. Scramble over its forts and protective walls, still mounted with cannons, (which didn’t put off the pirates): a treat for the imagination.. Visit the large castle, the naval and gold museums. Also spend one night on the tropical island of Majagua with its beautiful palm-fringed beaches. Return to Cartagena, stroll along its cobbled streets within the old city or relax on the broad sands of Bocagrande Beach where a constant colourful theatre of vendors of bikinis and fruit provide endless entertainment.
