Chile

Spanish Course in Santiago

Chile's cosmopolitan capital stands upon a broad valley plain at 600m above sea level. On the city's eastern edges the immense wall of the Andes soars to 6,000m. Few world capitals have a more dramatic setting. For a panoramic view of the city, visit the Cerro Santa Lucía, a hilltop park where Pedro de Valdivia decided to found the city in 1541. Santiago offers the comforts and cultural activities of a big city and is close to beaches, mountains and Chile's lake district.

Language Programme

  • If there are only 1 or 2 students in a class, the number of hours will be reduced to 15 per week.
  • Spanish levels offered - 7 levels available including "Professional" (one step above advanced).
  • Highly conversational teaching method. Everything is taught in Spanish.
  • Advanced & superior levels - There is a great chance that there will be few or no other students at your level. In that case your hours will be reduced to 15 per week, but you will cover the same amount of material.
  • Private instruction at extra cost.
  • There is an oral exam that determines what level the student is and what books should be used.
  • Class schedule - Group classes run from 10:30am - 2:30pm.

School Atmosphere

  • Most students are from Germany, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and USA.
  • Students of all ages study at the institute, including high school and university students, executives, tourists and senior citizens. The majority are in their mid 20's.
  • The school is in a modern building in one of the nicest residential areas near the city centre (Providencia) and is easily reached by tube or bus. The classrooms are indoors and comfortable, equipped with videos and televisions.
  • Capacity - 60 students.
  • The school organises at least two optional activities per week. Each month an activity schedule is posted with excursions in Santiago and the surrounding area: Central market, Parque Forestal, Museo Bellas Artes, Winery Concha y Toro, Isla Negra (the home of Neruda), Cerro San Cristobal, Pomaire (a handicraft village), Los Dominicos ranch and artist village, Las Chascona (Pablo Neruda's home in Santiago), Santa Lucia and the artesanias market, Santiago museums.
  • Weekend trips - These are sometimes organised by the school but it depends on how many students are interested. Santiago is only 1-2 hours away from some of the best ski resorts (during the Chilean winter) and about 2 hours away from the beaches (during the Chilean summer) and lake resorts.

Homestays

  • All homestays are within public transport distance from school. Santiago has a modern underground system which takes you to all main areas of the city.
  • Sometimes there will be two students per family
  • Private room, unless otherwise requested
  • Breakfast and dinner are provided by the host family.
  • Private bathroom - Available at some homestays.
  • It is best to arrive Sunday and depart Saturday from the host family. Anything outside of this time frame is considered extra homestay time.
  • You can do your own laundry at your homestay (if washing machine is available) or take it to a laundrette.
  • Airport pick-up is included if staying with a family
Family Stay - One of the most important parts of your learning and cultural experience is the homestay. You will receive a key to the outside door and will be able to come and go as you please. You are not obliged to eat your meals with the family but you should notify them when you will not be eating at home. Your host family respects your beliefs and we ask that you show that same respect for their beliefs. It is a good idea to bring some pictures of family, friends, your house and even a map that shows where you live. These can be used to begin discussions.
Notify the director of the school if you wish to change families (please note one week's notice is required for this).
