This perfect combination of a stunning beach, Praia do Rosa (voted the most beautiful in Brazil), wild-life watching and outdoor activities is on offer slap bang in the middle of the school summer holidays, and at autumn half-term.
The highlight of a few days here is the opportunity to get up close to the Southern right whales which swim up from Antarctica to calve in the bay. The sight of these superb, gigantic mammals leaves an indelible impression on the mind. You can spot playful dolphins, help the locals with their fishing nets, learn how to surf, or go horse-riding.
This, the most European influenced part of the country, is often unfairly neglected in favour of the tropical regions, but we think that the mountainous scenery, series of lovely bays, and prolific wild-life complemented by a benign climate is excellent for families.
We’ve been there
"It was only a 30-minute boat ride before we spotted the whales and their young - a really moving moment. The motor cut out, and we could take photos of the huge mammals as they hugged the boat." Agnese Verilli, Travel Consultant.
A bit more time?
If you have older children head off into the Serra Geral, beautiful mountain range in the Florianópolis hinterland, for trekking, canoeing or abseiling in Brazil’s gaucho (cowboy) country.
Weather watch
Whale-watching season falls in South Brazil’s winter, when temperatures can vary widely with an average of 16°C. and 5 to 8 hours’ sunshine per day. Not really beach weather, and the sea is cold, but you could be lucky and enjoy a warm spell.
Top Tip
Keep your eyes peeled as you may well be able to spot the whales from your hotel bedroom or the beach-front.
