From the unmissable Iguaçú Falls, explore lesser-known southern highlights of Brazil: thickly wooded mountains criss-crossed by walking trails , descended by the Serra Verde vertiginous railway and silvery rivers. The golden beaches of Florianopolis are especially alluring in the southern summer. It’s easy to continue south to round off your holiday in Buenos Aires.
Suggested holiday itinerary (flexible)
Day 1 Overnight departure to Rio from the UK.
Days 2-4 At leisure in Rio de Janeiro, with excursions by jeep to Corcovado Mountain (Christ the Redeemer’s statue) and the Sugar Loaf Mountain.
Days 5,6 Fly to Foz do Iguaçú and explore Iguaçú Falls, with an excursion to the Argentinean side, where walkways weave above, below and even behind some of the 275 separate falls, which crash through bird-filled sub-tropical jungle. You'll also see the magnificent panorama of the whole length of the Falls from the Brazilian side.
Day 7 Fly to Curitiba, Parana (1hr).
Day 8 Take the Serra Verde train from the tightly forested mountains down to the coast
and overnight in a lodge close to Marumbi State Park.
Days 9-11 Drive to Florianópolis, on an island in Santa Catarina state, and spend
a few days relaxing at apretty pousada overlooking a bay on the north of the island. (Alternative options for days 9-11 include walking in the Serra Geral mountains or whale watching in season, Aug-Oct).
Days 12-15 Fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina’s richly rewarding capital, and after a guided city tour explore independently the city’s various barrios and parks. You might take optional excursions to the river channels of the delta where the banks are enlivened by boating clubs and floating restaurants, or ride a catamaran across the River Plate to Uruguay.
