Recife and Olinda, Bahia, northeast Brazil
Daily from Recife
Half day
Somewhat optimistically referring to itself as the Venice of Brazil, the city of Recife (3rd largest in the country) can certainly be defined by its water and bridges.
It is one of the country’s principal centres of traditional arts, and hosts some impressive museums. This half-day excursion from the city visits Olinda, with its colonial elegance and many churches.
Visit the Monte Guararapes, site of the decisive battles that led to the expulsion by the Portuguese of the Dutch colonial garrison. Continue to the centre of the city and visit the Golden Chapel and Casa da Cultura (the former municipal prison converted into handicraft and soapstone-armadillo shops).
Drive north to Olinda, visiting the Mercado da Ribeira (once a slave market, now young proprietors run small stalls here), and the São Francisco Convent, with its splendid woodcarvings.
The tour usually also takes in the Episcopal Palace, the Seminario de Olinda and the Igreja da Sé. Return to Recife. |
