Mata Atlantica

Brazil's coastal rainforest

Daily from Curitiba
5 days, 4 nights

A unique opportunity to explore Brazil’s largest surviving stretch of mata atlântica coastal rainforest. It begins with a spectacular railway journey along mountain passes and through cloud forest to the lowlands.

From here, you travel by combination of road and boat into the complex network of inlets, waterways and mangroves of the sub-tropical coast of Paraná state.

Two nights are spent at a basic lodge deep in the forest (no electricity, shared facilities, dormitory style accommodation with limited privacy).

This is an extremely scenic trip to a sparsely inhabited, remote region which remains virtually untouched by tourism.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Curitiba and overnight at a comfortable hotel.
Day 2 Serra Verde Express train (3 hrs), disembarking at Morretes - the most scenic stretch of railway in Brazil. Continue by road and boat via Guaraqueçaba to the Sebuí reserve (3½hrs), near the Superaguí National Park.
Days 3&4
Guided walks and kayaking through the mata atlântica rainforest, mangroves and creeks. Excursions to Pinheiro island, refuge of the endemic and endangered red tailed Amazon parrot, as well as nearby fishing villages and beaches. Return to Guaraqueçaba on the afternoon of day 4 and overnight at a simple hotel.
Day 5 Return to Curitiba.

How about?

Continuing south along the coast to spend a few days in the lap of luxury at Ponta dos Ganchos, or go whale watching at Praia do Rosa.
