England may be the home of football, but surely Brazil is its heart and voice. The 2014 World Cup is being held there from 13 June to 13 July with matches taking place in 12 cities. In spite of misgivings about the cost and deadlines, it is fully to be expected that the country will erupt in delirious enthusiasm as the tournament approaches. When Brazil plays, the country shudders to a silent halt when a penalty is lined up, only to explode in a cacophony of cheering if they score. You have to be there to believe it.

This fixed departure positions you in Brazil’s most fascinating and alluring cities so that you can enjoy a highlights holiday while soaking up a bit of the atmosphere.

Our journey coincides with games in Manaus (14 June, when England take on Italy!) and the Salvador da Bahía area (16 and 20 June). We aren’t selling tickets but if you’d like to try to take in a game you can apply from the official FIFA website. Otherwise, you can watch games on the TV in your hotel and in bars and parks, alongside Brazilian enthusiasts draped in their national team colours of yellow, blue and green. For smaller scale excitement but equal joyous participation, you could cheer on a game of beach football under the floodlights in Rio or Salvador.

I was living in Brazil during the World Cup of 1986. It was an extraordinary experience in which I witnessed the sweeping up of virtually the whole population in almost hysterical excitement. Of course they expected to win: when Zico missed his penalty in the shoot-out against France the country collapsed in speechless gloom (for a day or two!)...

England play Italy 11pm BST in Manaus on 14 June. Italy is the country which knocked England out of the Euro finals in 2012 ..time for revenge..

You can be there!!

If you have the good fortune to get a match ticket, based at our jungle lodge close to the city, you will be well placed on our World Cup holiday to attend the game.
