Suggested holiday itinerary
Day 1 City tour of the historic centre of São Luis.
Day 2 Drive to Barreirinhas and explore the Lençois Maranhenses National Park by jeep – a panorama of an endless expanse of sand dunes and clear water lagoons which support a rich variety of wildlife.
Day 3 Travel by speed boat along the swampy Preguiças river, calling at Vassouras – for trekking in the dunes.
Day 4 Drive to the Parnaíba Delta and explore by boat. A traditional way of life survives in the communities established among the delta’s islets, mangroves and lagoons, a haven for thousands of birds. Overnight in Parnaíba.
Day 5 A full-day’s drive along the wild coast of Ceará state to Jericoacoara.
Day 6 Full day in Jericoacoara, a traditional fishing village which has developed into a relaxed resort.
