Dunes and Lagoons: Lençois Maranhenses and Jericoacoara

9 days from £1,575

In the remote, far north of Brazil lies the Parnaiba delta, the largest in the western hemisphere. Its islets and lagoons are fabulous for bird watching. Beyond, are the spectacular, surreal dunes and crystalline pools of Lençois Maranhenses National Park, still undeveloped and only just being discovered by tourists. A traditional way of life survives in the region's sleepy, riverine fishing communities and small coastal towns. Even in the popular beach hangout of Jericoacoara, there was no electricity until 20 years ago and it remains delightfully low-key. This is an adventurous trip for those who want to - literally - get off the beaten track, exploring by jeep, boat and 4x4. And now, with the launch of direct flights to Fortaleza from Madrid, there's never been a better time to go. Additional nights can be added if you would like to extend your holiday in Jericoacoara.

Our Comment

Away-from-it-all Brazil: this is another side to the multi-faceted country, with particularly friendly and unassuming people and a completely unspoilt landscape.  April to October/November is considered the best time to visit this region.
