4 days, as part of a tailor-made holidayUruguay is easily reached by ferry or air from Buenos Aires. This short trip to Colonia, Montevideo and the beaches of Punta del Este illustrates just one way the highlights of Uruguay, Argentina’s peaceful neighbour, can be incorporated into a wider holiday.
Suggested holiday itinerary
Take the catamaran across the River Plate estuary to Colonia, a pocket of tranquillity in contrast to the bustle of Buenos Aires. Wander briefly through this pretty former Portuguese riverside town, with its cobblestone alleyways, one-storey colonial houses, lighthouse and yacht club. Continue by road to Montevideo for one night. We recommend the Radisson Victoria Plaza or the Sheraton.Take a tour of the capital’s colonial core, full of grandiose monumental architecture.
Continue for a 2-night stay at the glamorous Uruguayan beach resort of Punta del Este, where there are swish hotels - one of our favourites is L'Auberge - and restaurants, opulent mansions and a yacht harbour spread out along the extensive sandy coastline. Return to Buenos Aires by air. Our comment
It's a bit like stepping back over 50 years to an era of a slow-paced lifestyle and old-fashioned charm. So different from cutting-edge, racey Buenos Aires. What the people lack in style they make up for with their friendliness many speak excellent English.
