Antarctic Dream - Antarctic Cruise Ship
80 guests
Modified from a naval vessel, this Chilean ship has been transformed into a superior expeditionary cruiser offering facilities and comfort of a very high standard for its guests, and the overall ambience is that of a rather smart hotel. It has an ice-strengthened hull, of course, and stabilisers. During the 2012-13 season, some departures will include a flight back from Antarctica to Punta Arenas in Chile, meaning you still get to experience crossing the Drake Passage, but you won't have to do it twice...
The facilities
There are 4 categories of cabin, smart and cosy at the same time, each with private bathroom with shower or bathtub, individual heating control, closed-circuit TV and wardrobe. There are several outside observation decks. In the lower section of the ship is a small gym with running and cycling machines, and a sauna. Other public areas include the dining-room, bar, lounge, auditorium and library. There is an open bridge policy so guests are welcome to go up and learn about the navigation instruments, and see how the course is charted. Wellington boots and expedition parkas are loaned free of charge on board.
Optional adventure activities
Ask us about special optional camping departures, an opportunity to spend 2 nights under canvas in the Antarctic! It's fully supervised and you dont need any previous experience. Availability is limited to 18 campers, so advance booking is essential. All departures offer optional sea kayaking in Antarctica: this can be booked on board but space is strictly limited.
The feel
The mostly Chilean crew are friendly and willing to explain what they are doing. The main social focus of the boat is the comfortable and attractive lounge-bar and dining room which has panoramic windows on three sides, sofas and a stripped wooden floor. A great place to relax, read, socialise and observe wildlife and scenery.
Our Comment
The AD is very good value for money. Go for the Shackleton deck cabins if you can: relatively bright and spacious and on the same level as the lounge/dining room which serves as a wonderful observation deck. The option to fly back over the Drake Passage (to Chile) is ideal if you think you might not be able to stomach the return crossing.
