Mexico
Colonial character, Mexico City, beachside Mayan ruins
Day 1 Fri, daytime flight via the US to the mountainous heartland of Mexico and Guanajuato, arty University town clinging to the walls of a ravine.
Day 2 Guided walking tour of the lively colonial city where roads are forced into underground tunnels. Formerly a silver mining town, its fine architecture was based on this wealth. There are loads of play-houses, and impromptu performances of music and theatre spill out on to the narrow lanes.
Day 3 Drive (1.5 hrs) to San Miguel de Allende a colonial work of art in itself which is crammed with craft-shops and artist studios, bookish cafés and jacaranda-shaded courtyards. The town’s famous for its joyous festivals, fireworks and parades.
Day 4 Walking tour of the town, free time to enjoy the sunshine and maybe do a spot of shopping. It’s a wonderful place just to wander around soaking up the atmosphere.
Day 5 By public coach to Mexico City (4hrs). This vast metropolis seethes with life, inviting you to unravel its layers of history from pre-Aztec through colonial to modern times.
Day 6 Excursion to pyramids and temples of the monumental archaeological site at ancient Teotihuacán.
Day 7 Take your pick of the many museums, churches and palaces open to visitors; wander round the historic centre. Parks and squares often erupt with dance and mariachi music.
Day 8 Fly to Cancún and continue by road to the Mayan Riviera. There are palm-dotted sunbleached beaches and a turquoise sea to enjoy here.
Day 9 Guided tour of Tulum, the Mayan ruins with their wonderful cliff-top location.
Day 10 Return to Cancún for your flight home, arriving day 11, Mon. | The zócalo in Mexico City
