Climate
The dry season runs from late November to April and is the best time to visit. Temperatures are tropical - around 30oC, and it feels even hotter and more humid on the coast, especially towards the beginning of the wet season in May. San Salvador, at 680m above sea level, enjoys a slightly more temperate climate. The wet season is characterised by daily downpours which relieve the heat somewhat but travel by road can be difficult. The country is also vulnerable to hurricanes from September to November.
Below are two graphs showing average 24-hour temperature and rainfall for the San Salvador, Acajutla (on the coast) and London for comparison.

Festivals and Holidays
Most public holidays are related to the Roman Catholic calendar, especially Holy Week. Towns and villages all celebrate the feast days of their local saint, sometimes with protracted celebrations, such as in San Miguel and Sonsonate which include a programme of artistic events. The pretty colonial town of Suchitoto hosts a world-class arts and culture festival in February with music and dance groups.
Currency
The local currency is the US dollar. Current exchange rates are available via Google currency conversion or the OANDA currency converter. It's not advisable to try to acquire Latin American currency before travelling, if a currency is available in high street banks or exchange outlets the exchange rate is usually very poor. You can change US dollar cash or travellers checks locally and obtain cash advances via ATMs in most towns and cities. We’d advise that you tell your bank you intend to use your card abroad before you set off.
Visas
British citizens can find up-to-date information on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website. Citizens of other countries should consult their embassy before travel.
Vaccinations
We recommend that you always check with your own travel clinic or health professional before you travel, for advice specific to your requirements. The NHS Fit For Travel website contains for up-to-date health advice and lists the common vaccinations for travellers to El Salvador.
