COUNTRY INFORMATION

Climate
The dry season runs from late November to April and is the best time to visit. Temperatures are tropical - around 30oC, and it feels even hotter and more humid on the coast, especially towards the beginning of the wet season in May. San Salvador, at 680m above sea level, enjoys a slightly more temperate climate. The wet season is characterised by daily downpours which relieve the heat somewhat but travel by road can be difficult. The country is also vulnerable to hurricanes from September to November.

Festivals and Holidays
Most public holidays are related to the Roman Catholic calendar, especially Holy Week. Towns and villages all celebrate the feast days of their local saint, sometimes with protracted celebrations, such as in San Miguel and Sonsonate which include a programme of artistic events. The pretty colonial town of Suchitoto hosts a world-class arts and culture festival in February with music and dance groups.
