TRAVEL TO EL SALVADOR

Visitors are increasingly attracted to El Salvador, eager to appreciate the wild beauty of this tiny country. It has re-emerged from a turbulent past to become Central America’s fastest growing economy, reflected in the renovation of the historic centre of cosmopolitan San Salvador and an increasing number of quality hotels.

For the adventurous independent traveller, there is a good network of colourful buses and one of Central America’s few remaining passenger train services - a quixotically scheduled run between San Salvador and Metapán through coffee plantations.

While farming has undeniably made its mark on the countryside, El Salvador has some unforgettable scenery. Hike within the tropical forest of El Imposible National Park or drive along the winding Ruta de las Flores the country’s beautiful coffee heartland, stopping at charming highland villages along the way.

Other highlights include the delightful colonial town of Suchitoto with its cobbled streets and thriving arts scene, and Joya de Cerén – a pre-Colombian village remarkably preserved under layers of volcanic ash. Punta Roca is a popular destination for surfers.
