Angel Falls The world’s tallest waterfall enjoys a suitably dramatic setting in the ‘Lost World’ area of Venezuela, a thrillingly remote region where table mountains jut through the clouds and rivers cascade over beds of jasper. So remote, in fact, that just 60 years ago these kilometre-high falls were still unknown to the outside world. Even today, Angel Falls retains its isolated charm and offers an undiminished sense of wonder to the lucky few who discover it for themselves.
Where: southern Venezuela
Best time to go: The wet season (May to December), when the flow of water is greatest and the river level is high enough for expeditions to the base of Angel Falls by canoe.
How to get there: Fly from Caracas to Canaima, the starting point for Angel Falls tours.
Combines well with: Venezuela’s other highlights, which include stunning Caribbean beaches and the wildlife-rich Orinoco Delta.
Where to stay: Canaima. It is also possible to overnight in a simple base camp at the foot of the falls if exploring by canoe.
Length of stay: A visit to Angel Falls requires at least 3 days. For Venezuela’s other main attractions, add 1 to 2 weeks.
