Amazon
Enormous trees sheltering monkeys and birds, riverboats chugging through steamy jungle, the flash of a parrot overhead... the Amazon never fails to conjour up some of travel’s most evocative images. As a visitor to this unique environment, the humbling scale of nature will reignite your sense of wonder.
Where: The Amazon basin covers close to half the landmass of South America, but the best bases for Amazon holidays include Manaus (Brazil), the jungle lodges of Ecuador and the Peruvian Amazon. Jungle lodges and Amazon cruise boats are the main forms of accommodation.
When to go: Amazonian weather varies relatively little, with heavy rainfall to be expected at all times of year. Simply put, the best time to go to the Amazon is whenever suits your schedule.
How to get there: Manaus is well connected within Brazil, with direct flights from São Paulo and Rio, and many other indirect routes. The Peruvian Amazon is easily accessed from Cusco or Lima, while the Ecuadorian Amazon can be reached from Quito by air or road/river.
Combines well with: The highlights of Brazil, Peru or Ecuador (including the Galápagos).
Length of stay: We recommend a stay of around 4 days in the jungle, plus extra time to explore the region’s other highlights before or afterwards.
