Verity Allan: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Verity is a Latin American studies graduate who joined the company seven years ago, having lived in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico for a year and spent time living and travelling in Peru and Bolivia. Since then she has taken the opportunity to travel further still, even venturing as far as Antarctica. Apart from the awe-inspiring white continent, her favourite places are the Galápagos for its astonishing and fearless wildlife, and Cuba, where the experience of walking off the plane and seemingly into a different century left an indelible impression on her. Verity loves salsa as well as an array of Latin American dishes, especially the street food of Mexico. She has real insider knowledge of South and Central America, and loves using it to create the special and authentic details that make for an unforgettable trip.

Mary Anne Nelson: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Born in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, Mary has always had a particular fondness for this area of her home country. She grew up further south however, in Santiago, and also spent more than a decade in Cali, Colombia. Mary studied journalism in Chile and later went on to study medieval history, a subject for which she has a great intellectual curiosity. Mary’s love of Latin America is certainly not limited to her native Chile, and other areas that she would highly recommend to visitors include the salt flats of Bolivia, Colombia’s colonial Caribbean gem, Cartagena, and Venezuela’s Orinoco Delta. Amongst the highlights of her extensive travels is an unforgettable encounter with a huge condor, which was hovering just a few feet away from her in Torres del Paine National Park, quite possibly weighing up whether or not she was edible! Other memorable moments include her first view of the southern ice fields of Chile, swimming fully clothed in the Orinoco during a monumental rain storm, and of course, horse riding in the Atacama Desert.

Sophie Barber: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Sophie is a well-travelled team member who taught in China for a year before joining us, although her main areas of linguistic expertise are French and Spanish. She honed the latter while on a year abroad in Santiago, Chile, where she studied at a local university, and while backpacking around Central and South America. She has travelled throughout most of Latin America, but if pushed to choose a favourite area she tell you that she particularly loved the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, Bolivia’s surreal salt flats and Chile’s Easter Island, home of the mysterious stone moai that preside over the strikingly remote volcanic territory. For Sophie, it is the mixture of wildlife and nature combined with local culture and heritage that continues to draw her back to Latin America.

Sarah Beard: Group Tours Manager
As our Group Tours Manager Sarah Beard puts her ten years of experience at Journey Latin America to good use, drawing from over six of those spent as a tour guide to select the most inspiring and attraction-packed journeys from around Central and South America. Her own personal passion is Chile and Patagonia, and Sarah is perhaps at her happiest when staying on her very own patch of land in a remote part of the Chilean lake district, where she wakes up to views of three neighbouring volcanoes. Sarah is captivated by the wide open spaces and huge skies of the Southern Cone region, but when back home in England her love of the wilderness translates to an enthusiasm for hiking and camping all over the country. She also adores wine (Chilean, of course!) and seafood. Before joining us, Sarah lived in Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil and studied Iberian and Latin American studies, enabling her to pick up the Latin American vernaculars. She considers herself very lucky to have travelled throughout most of Latin America, but when pushed will tell you that her highlights are eating just-caught oysters on the island of Chiloé and catching a lift on a local Patagonian fishing boat – a journey that ended up lasting three days!

Hannah Burwell: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Hannah spent a number of years in Colombia as a child, and has also lived in Brazil, where she worked in tourism, and in Costa Rica, volunteering at a centre for local children. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese and studied both of them along with Latin American studies at Newcastle University. Hannah particularly loves the landscape of Chile, the people of Colombia and the variety and vibrancy of Brazil, and some of her most unforgettable experiences come from these countries. She particularly loved the sand dunes of the Atacama Desert, the Easter parade at the Colombian colonial city of Popayán and travelling by dug-out canoe through the Brazilian rainforest, stopping off for lunch with Amazonian tribespeople. Back at home, Hannah enjoys theatre and film as well as cycling and running.

Adam Calladine: Travel Consultant
Adam joined Journey Latin America straight after graduating with a degree in French and Spanish. Originally working as part of our dedicated Customer Services team, Adam was able to acquire the in-depth knowledge of Latin America required to become one of our specialist travel consultants. Adam counts memories of hang-gliding over Rio amongst the highlights of his travels, alongside experiencing the spontaneous, musical culture of Havana and Trinidad in Cuba, and witnessing the cascading white water of Iguaçú Falls. He is also a fan of the laid-back atmosphere of Ilha Grande, Brazil, but enjoys a good party too: Adam recommends taking part in the riotous Cachaça Festival held in Paraty or cruising along the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City amongst mariachi bands and local revellers. One of his tips for visitors to Mexico is to try a michelada – a surprisingly delicious concoction of beer, Worcestershire sauce and chilli!

Margot Chard: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Margot hails from Peru, but her appetite for new cultures and ambition to explore the other side of the world brought her to the UK ten years ago. She has spent the last nine of those at Journey Latin America, where Margot’s experience in the Peruvian travel industry as well as her academic studies in the field of tourism have been a boon to the Bespoke department to which she now belongs. Margot has particularly fond memories of Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and Costa Rica, but she believes that each country within Latin America is highly individual and has something unique to offer. She has no qualms about picking a favourite when it comes to cuisine however – Margot, who admits she is a little biased, would heartily recommend an array of specialities from her native Peru, including ceviche, carapulcra and the zingy Pisco Sour cocktail. She also loves sport, running charity marathons and listening to all kinds of Latin music.

Lina Fuller: Travel Consultant, Tailor-made
Originally from the tranquil coffee-producing region of Colombia, Lina sought out the chance to travel at a young age by moving to Córdoba in northern Argentina to study arts and photography. Even a successful career as a fashion designer could not tie her down, and she was soon off again – travelling around almost every country in South America. After this and many more forays around the world, Argentina is still her favourite country – thanks to the gastronomy, landscape, music and passionate way of life that she first fell in love with as a student. Her other top destinations include colourful Bolivia and Guatemala, and she recommends trying the food in Mexico (it’s nothing like Mexican food in the UK!).
