Rafe Stone: Product Manager
Rafe has been with Journey Latin America since 1992, having heard of us through bumping into our tour leaders during the course of his extensive travels in the late 80s. He took the only available position at the company upon his return, starting out in the Post Room, and gradually worked his way through most of our departments before arriving in Product in 2004. There he oversees our range of holidays within Mexico and Central America, an area full of compact but diverse countries which he loves for their culture, their dramatic history and for the endearing quirkiness of their traditional festivals. He also loves the musical and gastronomic specialities of the zone, particularly norteño music, seafood tacos and the simple street food on offer in Mexico. Some of the most memorable moments from Rafe’s travels include sleeping on the deck of a Corumbá-bound boat from Asunción, Paraguay, for three days amidst wild storms, as well as seeing million-strong clouds of Monarch butterflies emerge from the sunlit treetops of the Mexican forest to which they migrate each year. He can also never forget the 3-day walk to Coroyco from La Paz, Bolivia, mainly because 15 minutes from the end of their epic journey he and his friend thumbed a lift on a truck they assumed was headed to their destination and fell asleep, before awaking beside sackloads of mandarins, halfway back up the road to La Paz!
